Olympian Athletic Club’s Martin O’Donnell was in terrific form at the recent N. Ireland and Ulster Masters Championships at the Mary Peters Track, Belfast where he claimed an impressive medal haul.
Martin showed his versatility, competing in five events at the Championships and secured one silver and four broze medals in the V2 (over 40 years-old) category.
His first medals of the day came in the 100m and 200m events where two of the All Ireland Masters medallists also featured in a hotly contested affair.
With both races proving very close between the eventual medallists, Martin fell slightly off the pace at the end and had to settle for bronze in both events, however, it was a great end of season exhibition of sprinting by all involved.
Later Martin stepped up a distance to contest the 400m for the first time at competitive level and again was against the top two 400m runners in the country.
He fought all the way and was close to snatching a silver medal but again gained himself another well deserved bronze medal in a very impressive time of 59.84secs, which pleasingly would have been good enough for bronze medal at the All Ireland Championships.
Next up Martin demonstrated his technical ability in the discus event, placing third to claim his fourth bronze medal of the day.
However his best was saved to last when he contested the Shot Putt event. Martin blended his power and technical ability together superbly and produced an extremely impressive new personal best throw of 9.52m to claim a richly deserved silver medal to cap off a highly successful day.
