GREENCASTLE’s Open Scramble on Saturday last, sponsored by the City Hotel, attracted a good entry of 29 teams and low scoring was expected.
The winning card belonged to the quartet of Gavin Harkin, Patsy Harvey, Conor McCourt and Martin Harvey, their nett 59 included six birdies.
In second place were four of the younger golfers in the club, with a score of 60.4, Tom Houston, Sean McQuillan, Jack Keys and Andy Dolan.
In third place were the team of Tommy McBride, Paul O’Doherty, Peter Lawrance amd Brian Barr with 60.95, and in fourth place were John McCartney, Paul McCole, Phonsie McCole and Andrew Ward. They finished with 61.30.
On Sunday, five players tied on 38 points. Hilary Donnelly (16) and Barry Davey (16) both had identical totals for the two halves, but Hilary’s birdie ‘2’ at the last gave him a better final three holes and resulted in his victory.
In third place after another break of tie was Frank Faulkner (23). Bee Kelly won the gross with 32 pts, and the ‘nines’ were claimed by Hugh Casey and Donal Bryce with 22 and 20 points respectively.
This weekend opens with an Open Charity event being run by the Sandwich Company, with the proceeds of the competition going to the very worthy Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Sunday’s competition is a Singles Stableford which will be the third in the ‘Player of the Year’ competitions.
Also on Sunday, the club’s Ulster Cup team travel to Narin & Portnoo to complete their match. The first leg ended in a narrow win for the home team, and they go to West Donegal with a fighting chance.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, April 11th, 19 ladies from Greencastle played in the singles stableford and there was very good scoring by the top three.

Notes From North-West
A huge turnout of 141 played in last Saturday’s “Open Meal Deal” at Lisfannon. And with the strong breeze making scoring very difficult, just five players broke the standard scratch of 34 points.
However, Christopher Hegarty (15), who posted a modest 15 points at the turn, had a super back nine of three over gross highlighted by a birdie at the par three “Fairy” for a total of 37 points.
But Chris had to survive a break of tie with Gino Del Pinto (13) who posted the same score but lost out on countback,
In third place was Leo McGowan (22) with 36 points with nine handicapper, John O’Brien, in fourth with 35.

Portsalon Divot Evening
A “divot evening” has been arranged at Portsalon for Tuesday, April 30th and members are asked to assist.
The Portsalon Gaeltacht League Captain’s Prize will be staged at Portsalon on Saturday, May 4th. All who played in this season’s Gaeltacht League are eligible to play in the event. Just collect a card, record the Gaeltacht League as the competition and return to the score card box.
