President’s Day at Greencastle tomorrow

GREENCASTLE Golf Club’s highly popular President, Seamus Doherty (right) will stage his President’s Day at the Inishowen course this weekend and it’s certain to attract a large turnout.

Seamus was club captain in 2001 and has served on council for over 15 years during his time with the club. While being involved in almost all of the committees during that time, he has been mostly involved with competitions.

He has represented the club in many different competitions including the Ulster Cup, Jimmy Bruen, Donegal League and Mixed Foursomes.

All players are requested to be at the club 15 minutes prior to their selected tee-off time. This should ensure the smooth running of the day.

Meanwhile, Open Week continued with the Gillen’s Supermarket Fourball Betterball on Wednesday and Tommy McBride and Philip Babbington won the competition easily with 49 points, five ahead of the large entry.

Results - 1, Tommy McBride and Philip Babbington; 2, break of tie, Colm Doherty and Brendan Devlin; 3, Des and Gareth Reid; Front nine - Keith Lapsley and James Fleming; Back nine - Anthony Thompson and Clement Doherty.

Thursday was ladies day and the competition was sponsored by the North West Gas Company Limited. Despite the inclement conditions, 39 played in the competition.

Results - 1, Pat Donaghy (19) 38 pts; 2, Celia McCole (21) 36; 3, Joy Quigg (25) 34; 3, Antoinette Hegarty (21) 33; Gross - Lucia Mullen 33; Nines - Aoife McKeever (18 points) and Jo Murray (17 points).

The River Inn sponsored Fridays gents singles competition, and it was the turn of Patrick Duncan (19) to take the plaudits with a win after break of tie.

Results - 1, break of tie, Patrick Duncan (19) 41; 2, George Harley (10) 41; 3, Eddie Rigney (20) 39; Gross - Jason McLaughlin 31; Front and back nine were won by Ernie Gray and Oliver Drummond with 23 and 22 points respectively.

Saturday’s ‘WE DO ART’ fourball betterball any combination attracted a very large entry and resulted as follows - 1, Gerry and Sean McQuillan 45pts; 2, break of tie, Wilson Kirby and Alan Knox (Cairndu) 44; 3, Noel Noone and John Keyes 44; Front Nine - Nigel Davenport and John Murray 23; Back Nine - Des and Gareth Reid 24.

Open Week closed with the Faulkners of Moville singles stabelford and this turned out to be the most eventful day.

While the best cards received the prizes, Gerry Guckian’s name was the talk as he achieved two holes in one. Firstly a five iron ran into the cup at the ninth hole, and then at the 11th, the next par three he choose a seven iron to do the trick. Results - 1, Mark Tracey (15) 42 pts; 2, Shaun McLaughlin (11) 42; 3, Willie Havlin (5) 41; Gross - Tommy McBride; Nines - Des Henry and Billy Kerr.

City of Derry

Kevin Green (21) recorded his maiden victory at Prehen on Sunday and he did it in fine style with an excellent 44 points even with two double bogeys on his card.

Results - 1, Kevin Green (21) 44pts; 2, Mark McIvor (10) 39; 3, Jack Johnstone (24) 38.

John McLaughlin (10) continued his fine form on Saturday when taking the honours in this year’s John Cooke cup with a great score of 41pts birdies at the 8th and 18th helped John to win by 1pt from Eamon McManus(13) on 40pts with Kevin O Donnell in 3rd.
