Priorians welcomed Castlederg to St. Columb’s Park on Saturday as the Derry Ladies opened their 2013/14 league campaign with a hard fought 1-1 draw.

Priorians started strongly and held their shape well as Castlederg tried to hit long, hard balls through the midfield. The Derry side kept a higher percentage of possession but Castlederg still managed to win two short corners in succession with the second resulting in the opening goal for the visitors.

Despite falling behind, Priorians held their nerve and settled back into their rhythm with some great linking play between the midfield and forwards. Emma Sproule and Claire Whiteside both had shots on target which were saved by Castlederg’s keeper as the locals began to increase the pressure on he visitors.

That Priorians pressure eventually when a great run up the left by Netty Wilson saw Sproule get the ball in the circle where she confidently found the back of the net with a reverse stick shot.

Priorians maintained the pressure with two more on target shots but the full time whistle prevented any further goals, leaving the result at 1-1. Heather Manning was voted player of the match.
