LOCAL athletes were treated to glorious sunshine as the second of the Foyle Valley series of summer ‘out the line’ races took place along the River Foyle on Saturday.

This race was a 5km distance and it was Foyle Valley’s Scott Rankin who made it two wins from two when coming home in a time of 15m 33secs.

And he was followed by City of Derry Spartans’ Noel Logan (15m 40secs) and third placed Pius McIntyre from the host club who continued his excellent season with a time of 16m 32secs.

The flat out-and-back course benefited from a tail wind on the way out towards Carrigans but the tables were turned on the way back with a stiff headwind for everyone to contend with.

Foyle Valley’s Ryan Snodgrass took the Over-35 category title in 17m 32secs and teammate, Marty Dunleavy claimed the Over-45 honours for the second week in a row in 18m 37secs.

Unattached runner, Tony Edgar took the Over-40 category in 22m 05secs while Foyle Valley veteran, Kevin O’Neill kept up his impressive return to running by taking the Over-50 category in 26m 07secs.

And the evergreen Christie McMonagle maintained his domination in the Over-60 age category with a 20m 10secs finish.

Carlin takes female

honours

The women’s race was well supported with, once again, a great turn out from the Old Library Trust group who have become a noticeable and lively presence on Derry’s streets of late.

Many of these women have never run nor completed a race before and they are definitely in danger of being bitten by the running bug!

First home in the women’s race was last week’s Over-45 category winner, Lorraine Carlin. Lorraine posted 23m 06secs to take the top spot followed closely behind by second placed Clare Harkin in 23m 50secs with Rachel O’Donnell, Old Library Trust, third place in 24m 32secs.

Grainne McGinley, also representing the Old Library Trust took the Over-35 prize in 24m 53secs and Martina McCafferty of Foyle Valley A.C. won the Over-40 category.

Fiona Prender and Patricia Mullin, both of Inishowen A.C., were the Over-45 and Over-50 prize winners.

Last but not least, another Old Library Trust runner, Anne Hutton secured the Over-55 category prize after a tremendous effort .

Congratulations to all those who took part especially the first timers and race novices.
