THIRTY-two players representing golf clubs throughout the North-West and further afield, will contest the 36th Travellers’ Trophy tour next week in Majorca.
Organised by City of Derry’s Andy Meenagh, the 72 holes tour will tee-off on Monday next at Poniente with Tuesday’s second round to be played on Santa Ponsa. It’s back to Poniente on Wednesday with the tournament drawing to a close on Thursday with the final round on Santa Ponsa.
As usual those taking part have come from a wide area with 17 members of City of Derry Golf Club joined by seven from North-West with the eight other players from Newtownstewart, Portsalon, Cruit Island, Highgate (London), Ballynahinch, Portadown and from the Joondalup Club in Australia.
Mr Willie Barrett, a long-standing tour party member of the Prehen club will travel as the non-playing official for the fifth time.
Unfortunately, last year’s surprise winner, Sean Doyle (Arklow) cannot travel to defend his title but there are quite a few former winners in the travelling party.
Tommy McBride (City of Derry) and North-West’s Frank McCarroll will be the lowest handicapped players on tour and both will believe that they can lift the coveted Travellers Trophy next Thursday.
However, so many players have the capability to win with past victors such as Brian Long, Stephen Wray, Colm McCarroll and Peter Villa keen to return to prominence.
That said, there are quite a few other seasoned golfers such as like Karl Doherty, Gary Lecky and Eamon McCourt who will attempt to record their maiden victory having supported the tour for quite some time.
