OAKLEAF ABC clubman, Ryan Green got Friday night’s boxing extravaganza at The Venue off to an outstanding start for local boxing fans when crowned 9 Counties 50kg champion.

Green was awarded a 33-26 victory on countback against Daniel Lindsay fighting out of Belfast club St. Agnes.

The fight could have went either way and the judges scored it 8-8 after the final round.

And Green was delighted to have been given the decision in front of his home support.

“It feels great to win, especially a close fight,” he said. “The atmosphere was great and to have the crowd shouting an encouraging me on, it really helped.”

The first round of the fight started with both fighters measuring each other up and not willing to take a chance, and the continued in the same fashion with little punches landing and both boxers blocking resolutely.

The second round continued in the same fashion and again the two fighters threw little punches and were both willing to conserve energy rather than wasting it in throwing punches that missed.

Following a stagnant first two rounds, both fighters stepped up the tempo and Green landed with some strong combinations.

Green fighting on the fourth match on the bill said, “If I had of started quicker in the first and second round it could have been a better result.”

With home advantage in Greens favour, he felt it spurred him on to start a comeback against Lindsay fighting out of Belfast club, St. Agnes.

Lindsay and Green fought a tentative and nervy fight with both fighters failing to take control and assert their authority. Despite Lindsay taking the lead, Green did well to mount a comeback and eventually win it.
