Jason Smyth homecoming

Double Paralympic gold medallist Jason Smyth is expected to be a big crowd-puller when he returns home to Eglinton on Saturday afternoon.

A homecoming event has been organised by Eglinton Community Forum, with the assistance of Derry City Council, for around 3.30pm.

Derry’s Mayor Kevin Campbell has said he plans to hold a civic reception for the sprinter next week.

He said he hoped to see a large turn-out for the homecoming.

Jason Smyth, who suffers from a degenerative eye condition, repeated his achievement for four years ago when he took gold in both the 100m and 200m at the Paralympics in London, becoming one of the stars of the Games.

The Mayor went on; “Jason Smyth is a truly remarkable athlete and sports personality and a real credit to his family and coach. It was very emotional watching him race during the Games and great to see the fantastic reception he received from the spectators. He is a great ambassador for sport and to young people across our city by the way he disciplined himself to train so intensively despite his degenerative eye condition. We are delighted to be part of his welcome home celebration and to formally acknowledge his achievements,”
