Matthew set to race on Continent

Fresh from gaining selection for the Irish team at the World Championships in his first year as a junior, 17-year-old Matthew Doyle (right) from Muff, a member of the local Foyle Cycling Club, will be racing on the Continent next year after securing a place with a Belgian pro-cycling feeder club.

The Foyle C.C. rider will be a member of the ‘Jonge Renners’ team which is based in Roselare in 2013 and he leaves for Belgium this weekend to start training for the forthcoming season.

In recognition of his achievement, the Foyle club and his supporters presented him with several cheques amounting to £700 to help support him in what will be an exciting, challenging adventure.

Matthew has recorded some excellent results so far in his young career and topped it off with a first place in an international kermesse race in Belgium in 2012.

He was part of the Youth FBD Talent Team 2020 concept this time last year and has since progressed very well into the junior ranks.

He also won a silver medal in both the National Junior Road Race and TT Championships which underlined his form and shows that the young man from Muff has excellent cycling potential.

Matthew now hopes to follow in the footbsteps of fellow Muff man and An Post team member, Ronan McLaughlin, into the professional ranks when he turns 18.

Speaking to the “Journal” yesterday, the teenager said he was delighted with his achievement, although he explained that much hard work lies ahead if he is to secure his future in the sport professionally.

“This year I’ll be taking part in the highest level of junior racing possible and I’ll be taking part in a few Nations Cup races.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for me to become a professional rider which I can’t do until I’m over 18 and in the under-21 category.”
