Memorable Hat-trick for Rankin as Series ends on high note
THE FINAL race in the Foyle Valley A.C. promotion, the “Out The Line Series,” took place last Saturday morning and the five miles distance was a step-up for many of the competitors after the opening 3 kms and 5 kms. events of the past two Saturdays.
Bright, sunny conditions with a slight cooling breeze made for almost perfect conditions for the 68 runners on the start line.
First home for the men was Foyle Valley’s Scott Rankin who made it ‘three out of three’ with a blistering 25 mins. 37 secs. clocking for the 5 mile course.
Scott ran on his own for the majority of the race finishing nearly two and half minutes ahead of the second placed runner, Finn Valley clubmate, Stephen Connor (28:06 mins.) who was followed home by Paddy Nicell (28:40 mins). Paddy also secured first prize in the over-45 years category.
For the second successive week Foyle Valley’ Ryan Snodgrass took the over-35 years category in a time of 28:45 mins. and other category winners were Thomas Doherty, over-40’s (32.00 mins.); Brian Baker, over-50’s (33:19 mins.) and Andy Griffin, of the Old Library Trust, took his second over-55 in 46:09 mins.
The women’s race was well supported again with a great turnout from the Old Library Trust Group. Indeed, quite a few turned up to complete all three races of the Series and secure a running vest.
First home in the women’s race was City of Derry A.C. member, Miriam Bridge in 34:04 mins. Miriam was followed home by Foyle Valley members Denise McElhone and Trish McClintock on 35:23 and 36:57 respectively. Trish McClintock also secured the ladies over-35 prize.
Other category winners in the ladies race were - Lorraine Carlin, over-45 in 37:58 and Patricia Mullin, Old Library Trust, winning her second over-50 category in 45:53.
Thanks To Sponsors
Foyle Valley A.C. would like to thank LO-LO-ALC for sponsoring the “Out The Line” race series. LO-LO-ALC’s Steven Boyle was a popular figure after each of the races providing samples of the low alcohol ciders and beer which are marketed by the firm.
A special thanks also to Mr. Brian McMenamin and the staff of Long Tower Youth and Community Centre who provided the use of their premises for these very popular community events.
Without access to these premises, it would be very difficult to host such a series of athletic events.
Congratulations to all those who took part, especially the first timers and race novices who helped make the inaugural ‘Out the Line’ Series such a great success.
