N. Ireland Indoor Championships tomorrow

editorial image

After last Sunday’s National Cross Country Championship action in Gransha,, this weekend it’s road, trail and indoor action in Magherafelt and Athlone, on the competitive agenda.

Sunday sees the latest of the North-West Tri Club’s Winter 5 kms. Series, a 10.00 a.m. start from the Sainsbury’s Car Park with the usual course on the riverbank and Bay Road set to attract another big entry.

Hopefully the weather will be kind and the runners escape the wind and snow flurries which have marked a lot of recent days.

Meanwhile, the National Indoor Championships for Under-20s, Under-23s and Masters will attract some local athletes to the spanking new Athlone facility while a bigger local contingent is expected to travel to Magherafelt for the N. Ireland/Ulster Indoor Age Group Championships.

The Magherafelt meeting takes place tomorrow (Saturday) only but the Athlone action will be spread over both tomorrow and Sunday.

Extensive programmes are the order of the day at both locations as the track and field specialists get an early opportunity to test their 2013 form.

Speaking of form, there was an Open meeting on the Finn Valley track last week and local athletes Emma McKay and Peter Fryer, in the High Jump; Claire Dougherty in the Long Jump and Lisa Bradley in the 1,000 m Walk impressed with wins.

Finally, the Roe Valley Country Park Trail Run is also set for tomorrow (Saturday) with the action starting at 11.30 a.m. with the Primary Schools’ race.

Then it’s the Under-13/Under-16 event at 11.50 a.m. and the female race goes at 12.15 p.m.

The Male Under-20’s and Masters have a 12.25 p.m. start and last off is the Men’s Open race at 12.35 p.m.

Schools’ Cross Country

at Mallusk next week

The Mallusk Playing Fields will host the N. Ireland Primary Schools’ Cross Country and the Secondary Schools’ Ulster Championships next Wednesday afternoon and a sizeable local contingent will travel in search of honours. After a very competitive local Primary Schools three race league, the Derry schools will be hopeful of challenging seriously for the top individual and team awards as, indeed, will be the second level runners who came through last Wednesday’s District qualifiers in Coleraine. More news on these championships next week.
