Oakleaf Open New Season in “Glass Works”

Hot on the heels of what has been its most successful season to date, Oakleaf Amateur Boxing Club will kick-off off the new season on Friday, February 1st with a mouth-watering tournament involving the high profile Olympic A.B.C. from Galway, who will arrive with no less than six Irish champions in their team.

The local Brandywell outfit will, of course, parade their own four Irish champions - Tom Stokes, Ryan Green, Francie Stokes and Brett McGinty - who between them have secured no fewer than eight national titles with the latter pair winning historic European Schoolboys’ Bronze Medals.

Oakleaf’s Irish runners-up medalists, Mairead Dobbins and Sean McGlinchey who were both unlucky not to claim national titles last season, will also be involved in the action.

Oakleaf coach Micky Dobbins claimed that the club had “one or two” exciting newcomers coming through the ranks, boxers he felt had the potential to got “right to the top” if they maintained their current workrate.

“We have one or two newcomers who will feature on the bill with Kain Divin and Michael Stokes expected to make their home-town debuts,” he said.

“And another local man who is also expected to make his debut is Gerard Ward, a recent Oakleaf recruit, who has made great progress in training,” he added.

In fact, the opening tournament will be staged at a new venue for amateur boxing in Derry - The Glass Works (the old library building) located the junction of Great James Street and Queen Street.

And the new venue promises to host a feast of top quality amateur boxing involving two the most successful clubs in Ireland.
