Foyle College’s Northern Bank Schools’ Cup dreams were dashed Banbridge Academy in a low scoring but entertaining game at Judges Road on Saturday morning.

The Foyle team started brightly with Neil Burns, Kyle Henderson and Oisin Duffy all asking questions of the well-organised Banbridge defence.

On a rare break out from defensive duties, the County Down School took play deep into Foyle territory and with only 15 minutes of the game gone, the visitors were awarded a penalty which scrum-half Aaron Kennedy converted to give his team what would turn out to be the game’s only score and a 3-0 lead.

Banbridge continued to dominate at this stage and went close with another long range penalty attempt after 20 minutes but Foyle responded to this near miss with two penalty attempts of their own, neither of which was successful.

With only three points between the teams at the interval, it was still all to play for in the second half.

Foyle team threw everything into attack in the early stages of the second period but the visitors defended vigorously and had Kennedy and Marc Stevenson to thank for some fine pressure relieving kicks.

This encouraged the Banbridge team and eventually they got enough possession to enable them to take play into opposition territory.

It was now the turn of the home team to defend and they did so for most of the final quarter as Banbridge pressure made it difficult for Foyle to mount any meaningful forays into the visitors half.

In the end, that solitary, early score ensured Banbridge Academy were celebrating a place in Round 4 where they will meet either Cambridge House or Wellington College.

Blair McDonald, Rory Thompson and David McKeown all contributed greatly to the success of the Banbridge Academy team while Stephen Chi, Tobias Anderson and Calvin Jones all impressed with their performances for Foyle.
