Derry Paralympic gold medalist Jason Smyth will return home to a hero’s welcome when he arrives back in Eglinton tomorrow evening.

The 25 year-old took his second gold medal of the London Paralympic Games when he finished in first place in the T13 Men’s 200m final.

Smyth took gold in both the finals of the T13 100m and 200m in Beijing four years ago and after securing gold in last weekend’s 100m sprint he successfully defended his crown when he romped to victory in the 200m on Friday.

Smyth destroyed his own world record with a final time of 21.05 seconds, shaving off a massive 0.9 seconds from his previous record.

Speaking to the Sunday Journal from the Paralympic Village in London yesterday, Smyth said he really appreciated the support back home and added that after a short break he will start concentrating on next year’s World Championships and the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

“I haven’t had a lot of time to think about it,” said Smyth.

“Obviously I am over the moon to add another gold to the one I took in the 100m last week.

“I’ll take a break for a few weeks and then I’ll get back into training.

“I missed out on qualifying for the London Olympics by 0.04 seconds so I am determined to make it to Rio,” said the four time gold medal winning Paralympian.

Smyth will join the rest of Team Ireland as they fly from London City Airport to Dublin tomorrow. The sprinter, who suffers from Stargardt’s disease (progressive vision loss) said he was looking forward to getting back home.

“I can’t wait to get back home - it should be fun seeing everyone again. I even tweeted Royal Mail to see what the chances are of a member of Team Ireland getting a post box painted gold in Eglinton are,” he joked.

“I am delighted with my performance at the Paralympic Games and I just plan on enjoying it with friends and family,” he said.

See Tuesday’s Journal for full indepth coverage of Jason Smyth’s Paralympic glory.
