Solid Support For ‘Wilkie’s Run’
Foyle Valley’s popular annual run/walk in memory of their late colleague, Colm Wilkinson, took place on Thursday night last along the traditional route - ‘out the line’ - in the Brandywell area.
The scenic course along the River Foyle using the cycle path is a fast, flat and accurately measured test for the serious and not so serious runner alike.
And last week’s event attracted an entry of over 120 competitors on a rather hot evening for running the competitors set off at 7.30 p.m. for the out and back five mile course.
First across the line was Foyle Valley athlete Pius McIntyre who added to his recent successes with an impressive run of 26 minutes 41 seconds clocking.
Pius had a comfortable cushion over runner-up Eirin McDaid (27.10 mins.) while another Foyle Valley athlete completed the podium when Chris McGuinness finished third in 27 mins. 26 secs.
The ladies race was won in impressive style by City of Derry Spartan, Catherine Lilburn, in a time of 32.00 minutes dead. Catherine had a comfortable lead over her nearest rival, Foyle Valley’s Martina McMullan who clocked 33 mins. 05 secs. Martina also won her age category prize.
City of Derry Spartan, Miriam Bridge, finished third in a time of 33 mins. 13 secs.
Meanwhile, the walk was not as well attended as in previous years, but well done to all those who supported the event. All proceeds from the event will as is usual be donated to local charities in Colm Wilkinson’s memory.
