Mid December is synonymous with classic cross country race action in the extensive Gransha grounds in Derry's Waterside and after a Covid enforced absence the hugely popular North West Cross Country – now rebranded as the Derry Cross Country – returns to the Clooney Road venue on Saturday, December 17th.

Experienced organisers City of Derry Spartans will present a five race program catering for primary schools, secondary schools, teenagers, seniors and master athletes, between 11am and 1.30pm, with around 350 – 400 participants expected to take part.

Race distances range from the 600 metres for the Primary 4 and Primary 5 kids to the Open 6K for the 16-year-olds plus category, seniors and Masters. The Primary 6 and Primary 7s run 1K, the U13s tackle 1.5K and the combined U15/17s go over 3K, before the Open 6k , an Athletics N.I. Winter League scoring race, brings the programme to a conclusion. The action begins with a 12.30pm start time.

There is something for everyone in that programme in advance of the festive season, an ideal introduction to cross country running for the young kids, timely race action for the secondary school runners before the January District Schools Cross Country Championships and a tasty pre-Christmas run out on a tried and tested course for the more experienced club runners.

All entries are online only. No entries can be accepted on the day at race headquarters in Oakgrove Integrated College so checkout all the details on the Athletics NI website, Derry Spartans facebook or contact either of the following: Gerry Lynch, 07702006667 [email protected]
