WIDELY recognised as the academy which has supplied the North-West Cricket Union with top players for almost 90 years, the Derry Midweek Cricket League continues to produce young players with great potential.

Organised by a committee of 15 people, the League continues to cater for boys and girls’ cricket in particular and, indeed, for senior players who do not participate in North-West senior arena.

Sam McConnell, from Bready, has been associated with the Midweek League since 1968 when he joined the committee and having served two decades as chairman, he has now sat in the Presidental chair for the past six years.

“The Midweek League was initially founded to cater for boys’ cricket as the sport was not played in local schools at that time,” said Sam this week.

“Since then so many of the top local players have graduated through the Midweek ranks. We are totally separate from the North-West Cricket Union, but I think the role the Midweek League has played over the years has been significant,” he added.

“Since the early days, the Midweek League has expanded as it now takes in Sion Mills on one side and also caters for teams as far away as Coleraine.”

Senior players, plus boys and ladies are catered for these days with the Midweek League divided into three sections - Derry, Tyrone and Limavady.

“Quite a few players who have gone on to play international cricket have graduated through our ranks,” continued McConnell. “Top players such as Boyd Rankin, the McBrine twins, Junior and James, plus Decker Curry and Stephen Smyth have all come through the Midweek League before gaining prominence with clubs in the North-West.”

While the Midweek Committee only meets for the annual general meeting and the annual draw for their cup competitions, the organisation remains committed and determined to continue to provide for junior cricket in the north-west area.
