ASEA-Wheelworx rider to compete in Derry on Sunday

Marcus Christie, who smashed his Irish National 50 mile TT record on Wednesday night, will compete in the Ulster TT Championship which is being hosted by Foyle Cycling Club on Sunday.

Upwards of 100 top amateur cyclists will descend on the County Derry village of Eglinton to participate in the next round of the Championship. The first race is scheduled to start at 11.30 a.m.

The former Ireland U23 international’s time of 1:35:32 equates to 31mph or 49.88kms per hour. (The last several La Tour winners in France have averaged approximately 25 mph.

Foyle Cycling Club PRO, Ronan Gallagher, said that this was an amazing achievement. He continued: ‘Marcus has been one of the most consistent Irish riders over the last few years and we’re delighted that he will compete in the Ulster Championships on Sunday. It should be a fantastic day’s racing.’

The Ulster TT Championship follows the successfully hosting of Foyle Cycling Club’s Grand Prix on July 17th last in Killea, where almost 175 riders took part across all disciplines.

Riders from clubs in Antrim, Derry, Donegal and Down have already signed up for this Sunday’s race and categories are as follows:

Senior women; Junior women; Veteran women (over 40); Senior men, A1,A2, A3, A4; Junior men; Men 40/ 50/60; Tandems and Handcycling. ‘We’re hoping for a great turnout on the day,’

Foyle Cycling Club PRO Ronan Gallagher expects it to be a fantastic race: “The course at Eglinton is a great route and known well to many of the riders,” he said. “As usual, we pray that the weather holds up to facilitate a great day’s competition!”
