FOYLE College will seek to secure a Quarter-Final place in the Danske Banks Ulster Schools Cup tomorrow morning when they entertain Down High School at their Northland Road playing fields (k.o. 11.30pm).

Eoghain McKane reports

The Co. Down school represent something of an unknown quantity for the Foyle boys who last met tomorrow’s visitors two years ago in the competition and Foyle coach, David Barrett, admitted his side can’t afford to take tomorrow’s opposition for granted.

“I’m not sure how they will line up against us as they don’t play in the same league as us,” explained the Foyle coach, “We’re two even teams and it is likely to come down to whoever performs better on the day.”

The local college come into the match following an impressive 31-24 winning over Portora Royal in the previous round but they have injury doubts hanging over influential duo Neil Burns and Kyle Henderson. Otherwise Barrett has a full squad to choose from but the Foyle coach warned it is much too early to talk of a potential cup win.

“Our main focus is on the next match,” he added, “We will take each match as a it comes and focus on each round we’re still in.”

With the Foyle boys enjoying home advantage, some pundits have suggested they go into tomorrow’s tie as slight favourites, a view not held by the Foyle coach who believes they will require big performances from all of their key players to progress further.

‘Home advantage will be of no benefit to us but, that said, I would much rather stay here than travel away. I told the players that if they out-perform their opposite number and win all the key individual battles, we will win the match.

“We are confident in our own ability and we have nothing to fear coming in to the match. I am hopeful of big performances from all 15 of our players,” he added.
