Sporting Goals for City of Culture

Culture Company 2013 have invited representatives of local sports clubs and governing bodies to discuss their ideas for sporting events to be included as part of Derry-Londonderry’s City of Culture programme at a special event entitled “Goals for 2013” at the Northern Bank Studio in the Millennium Forum Theatre, on Wednesday, December 14th from 7.00pm - 8.30pm.

The Culture team is keen to make sure that the city’s rich sporting heritage takes its rightful place at the forefront of the 2013 celebrations. Sport might not immediately spring to mind when the word culture is mentioned. But, far from being a separate entity, sport is an integral part of the culture of Derry-Londonderry. From rugby greats like Ken Goodall, through to boxing legends like Spider Kelly and Charlie Nash, to current football stars like Celtic’s Paddy McCourt and Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson and Olympic hopefuls Aileen Morrison and Jason Smyth, the North West has always punched above its weight on the sporting front.

Speaking about the event, Culture Company Chief Executive, Shona McCarthy said: “It’s important not to underestimate the role that sport plays in the culture of the city. Sport plays every bit as big a role in Derry-Londonderry’s cultural make-up as activities which people would more immediately associate with culture - such as art, drama, literature and music.

“It’s particularly important to understand the benefits that participation in sport brings with it, not only in terms of health and well-being but also in battling social exclusion and all the attending problems which that creates, particularly for young people.

“With that in mind the City of Culture team are keen to make sure that there is a major sporting element to our celebrations in 2013.”

The “Goals for 2013” event aims to explore the opportunities as to how the local sporting community can make best use of the opportunities presented by the unprecedented platform that 2013 will provide. Whatever sport you are involved in; Soccer, Rugby, GAA, Snooker, Darts, Greyhound Racing, Athletics, Cycling, Boxing, Judo, Cricket, Canoeing or anything else, they want to hear your ideas.

If you have a plan from expanding an activity or event that already exists within the local sporting calendar or an idea for a completely new sporting event for 2013 then go along on December 14th.

Registration in advance is required. Due to limited capacity, the maximum number of places per organisation is two. In the event of the consultation being oversubscribed, priority will be given to locally based clubs and organisations within the Derry City Council area.
