Police in Strabane are appealing for residents not to get carried away by the Hallowe'en spirit this year. Inspector Harry Johnston said: "Unfortunately we have come to expect an increase in criminal activity in the run-up to the holiday period with a noticeable increase in criminal damage, assaults and anti-social behaviour. Youths messing about with fireworks account for many of the calls we receive and this could easily be rectified if young people realised the consequences of their a
“Fireworks contain explosive materials and can easily cause serious injury to people or property if misused. It is important to note that the law clearly says that fireworks must be bought from a licensed dealer who is required to keep sales records. The purchase, possession or use of fireworks without a licence is an offence.

“We would also appeal to the community to help us stamp out illegal trading and misuse of fireworks by contacting police with any information they may have.”

Inspector Johnston added: “Operation Snapper may be over however officers will continue to patrol known hotspot areas where underage drinkers are known to frequent and anyone caught drinking under the age of 18 will be reported. We will also be monitoring off-licences and pubs.”
