One of the longest serving members of the Strabane branch of St.Vincent De Paul has been honoured for his commitment to the community at a reception hosted by Strabane District Council.
Council chairman, Jarlath McNulty praised Mr. Sean McShane who has dedicated 57 years of his life to the society.

The reception also marked the 100th anniversary of St. Vincent De Paul, which was celebrated last year.

Speaking at the event Councillor McNulty said: "You are all to be commended for your dedication to helping those members of our community most in need. Often your work may go unrecognised but on behalf of all residents of the district, I would like to formally acknowledge the tremendous and worthwhile work which you do. I thank you for taking the time to care about others, for selflessly giving of your time."

He added: "The Society makes a real impact on the daily lives of people and provides a source of hope to those most in need in our community."

St. Vincent De Paul is a charity which aims to enhance the quality of life for those in need, regardless of class or ethnicity. Although Catholic in its roots, the society has always been cross community in terms of those who they offer assistance to.

The Society has grown in strength in Strabane over the century and now has 40 members and offers a myriad of services including providing financial assistance to those most in need in our community. This financial assistance can be for many things including; food, fuel, clothing, toys, funeral costs or assistance towards days out and holidays for the elderly.
