An off-duty police officer has been shot and seriously wounded in the Bishop Street area of Derry this morning.
The shooting happened in lower Bishop Street at 8,30am this morning.

The area has been sealed off and the injured police officer has been taken to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The 43-year-old, who's originally from Derry's Bogside, had just dropped his son off at a nearby school.

A car, believed to be connected to the gun attack, was found burned out a short time after the shooting in the High Park area of Creggan.

The shooting happened in an area close to two primary schools and a secondary school.

Chief Superintendent Ricky Russell said, "It's understood this officer sustained injuries to his face and arm but was able to drive to Strand Road police station following the incident. Whilst the injuries are not believed to be life threatening at this time, this remains a very serious incident and is being treated as attempted murder."

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the Bishop Street area between 8am and 8.45am this morning and witnessed the incident to contact police. Anyone with information who has not yet spoken to them is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road Station on 0845 600 8000.
