This Saturday, June 21, 800 feet above sea level at the iconic Grianán of Aileach site, Music City 2014 will begin with the summer solstice Dawn Chorus.
Under the musical direction of Fahan’s Mura Canning, Cór An Ghrianán Choir will lead the dawn chorus from 3.30am and will be joined by trad musicians, Robert Peoples, Ramon Ferguson, Ciaran Carlin and Joleen McLaughlin to create a magical performance at one of Ireland’s most spectacular historical sites.
Co-organiser Mary McCallion said: “The Féile Grianán Áiligh committee is inviting early birds across Donegal and Derry to gather at the fort at 3am to take part in what promises to be a truly magical event and to greet the dawn on the longest day of the year. Féile Grianán Áiligh is hoping to build on the success of last year’s dawn chorus and establish a permanent, annual event.”
Music City Festival Director Gareth Stewart added: “We are delighted to be able to collaborate with the Féile Grianán Áiligh committee once again this year to present the Dawn Chorus and celebrate the summer solstice and Music City 2014. To be able to bring alive one of Ireland’s most spectacular sites with music will be a great start to our festival.”
Park and ride facilities will be provided at €2 per car in the supervised car park.
The Dawn Chorus will be a family event and alcohol is strictly forbidden.
Due to health and safety regulations, access onto the walls of the fort will be restricted.
The Dawn Chorus is part of the wider Music City 2014 programme which will then continue throughout the day and night on June 21.
