Derry gets ready for a ‘legenderry’ festival!

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, The Beach Boys and the RAF Red Arrows: just three of the world-class ingredients which are to be served up at the LegenDerry Maritime Festival from Saturday 21st to Sunday 29th June. Derry City Council has just unveiled the full festival programme, packed with the sights, sounds and flavours of the sea, and it looks set to be the North West's greatest party of 2014. Unlocking the treasures are Gary Middleton, Deputy Mayor of Derry City Council, and pirates Brenn Doherty & Jude Gallagher. For more information, visit www.legenderrymaritimefestival.com

Organisers of the Legenderry Maritime Festival say Derry is set to resemble Cannes or St Tropez as the city prepares to play host to thousands of visitors and tourists in the run up to the Clipper homecoming.

The Festival, taking place from Saturday June 21 to Sunday June 29, will be the biggest sailing spectacle in Ireland this year, attracting thousands of visitors to the banks of the Foyle.

The programme is packed full of the sights, sounds and flavours of the sea to celebrate the arrival of the 2013-2014 Clipper Round The World Yacht Race.

The LegenDerry Maritime Festival will see the quayside transformed into a colourful continental marketplace and Festival Village by the marina, where the Clipper Race yachts will be moored alongside tall ships, naval vessels and visiting boats.

The Festival will kick off on Saturday, June 21st, with Music City Day featuring music from dawn to dusk all the way from Grianan of Aileach to Guildhall Square and along the quayside. Sunday, June 22nd will see the Ubuntu Global Festival, celebrating the music, arts and crafts of the 50+ nationalities making Derry and the North West their home .

Festival-goers will be ‘Surfin’ USA’ when the legendary Beach Boys take to the stage at Ebrington Square for their first ever visit to the city on Thursday, June 26th and it promises to be a concert to remember for years to come.

The LegenDerry Maritime Festival will have fabulous daily fun for all the family with nautical workshops in the arts and crafts tent, fairground attractions on the Pirates Promenade, Stinky Pirate’s Trail and Treasure Hunts.

There will also be a Heritage and Environment marquee packed with exciting interactive displays and information on our amazing marine and coastal habitats.

One of the many highlights of the Festival will be the adrenalin-charged watersports displays and for those inspired to try their hand on the water, there are taster dinghy sailing sessions, canoeing and a Moonlit Paddle.

The LegenDerry Maritime Festival is organised by Derry City Council with funding support from NITB and Diageo and delivery support from Foyle Port, the Loughs Agency, Visit Derry and Ilex.
