Derry group to perform at BBC Music Day 2016

Local Irish traditional music group, '˜Connla', will perform at BBC Music Day 2016 in Stormont later today.

Connla’, named after the son of Irish mythical hero Cù Chullain, was named Best New Group for 2016 at two separate award ceremonies; Live Ireland and Chicago Irish American News earlier this year.

Three band members, Ciara McCafferty, Paul Starrett and Ciaran Carlin are from Derry and the remaining two members, Conor Mallon and his sister Emer are from Armagh.

The band will perform on stage in Parliament Buildings with BBC NI and Arts Council’s NI Young Musician Of The year recipient Conor Mallon.

BBC Radio Ulster will be out and about to enjoy BBC Music Day 2016 with a number of outside broadcasts offering music and conversation to suit all tastes.

The day will get underway on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle with Sean Coyle as he broadcasts live from Mary Margaret’s outside Hilltown in Co. Down at 10.30a.m., with lots of musical performances.

Hugo Duncan continues with the BBC Music Day festivities as he heads to the Patrician Hall in Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone for an afternoon of live country music, cream buns and craic from 1.30p.m. on BBC Radio Ulster.

At 3p.m., Gerry Kelly will broadcast live from Parliament Buildings where the Ulster Orchestra and some special guests will be rehearsing for the BBC Music Day concert.

BBC Northern Ireland will then round off a special day celebrating the power and joy of music and community with a unique event at the historic Parliament Buildings.

Colin Murray is back home in east Belfast to present the showcase of local music at its very best as the home of political debate throws open its doors for BBC Music Day 2016.

The concert will be broadcast on BBC Two Northern Ireland and BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle at 9.30p.m.

Music will fill every corner of Stormont, from the Long Gallery to the Senate Chamber along the staircase and throughout the Great Hall as the Ulster Orchestra is joined by a wide variety of musical talent.

Performers include country star, Nathan Carter, Neil Martin, Glenn Patterson, Gary Lutton, Gavin James, Conor Mallon, Connla and the newly-crowned BBC Radio Ulster School Choir of the Year Dalriada School Choir from Ballymoney,
