“We love you Auntie Carmel” came a voice in the Millennium Forum on what was Carmel McCafferty’s last ever performance as ‘Maire - a Woman of Derry’.

It might have been her last night as Maire - but Carmel made sure she went out in style.

Complete with her trademark ripped coat and quarter bottle, Carmel had the audience clutching their sides with laughter one minute, and dabbing the tears from their eyes the next, well deserving her five minute standing ovation.

She owned that stage.

Those at the Forum will count themselves lucky at being able to see such a master at work.

Afterwards writer and director Brian Foster presented Carmel with her very own picture which will now be displayed in the Forum’s famous faces gallery, alongside the likes of Jason Donovan and Nadine Coyle.

Paying tribute to Carmel he simply said - “I could not have done it without her.”

There was also a special word for Carmel’s late husband Kevin and the very mention of his name had Carmel looking to the sky and whispering ‘Love you.’

Carmel once said she’d never seen the show. but now she’ll get her chance as the play was recorded on Friday night for DVD release.
