Film stars Ray Winstone and Jim Sturgess are heading to Derry to help the Foyle Film Festival mark an amazing milestone – 25 years in the film festival business.
The festival launches on Wednesday, 21 November with the Irish premiere of ‘Ashes’, a contemporary film noir that follows a difficult reconciliation between father and son and the latest film from director Mat Whitecross (‘The Road To Guantanamo’, ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’).
Bernie McLaughlin, festival director, said: “Over the years the festival has welcomed stars like Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Terry George, Neil Jordan, Wim Wenders, and Kenneth Branagh – to name but a few. And this year is no exception.
“As well as the famous faces, we have a packed programme of feature films, workshops, competition screenings, outreach and special events.”
Other festival highlights include a Pixar Retrospective in honour of the late Steve Jobs, with screenings of favourite Pixar films, including ‘Toy Story 3’, ‘Wall-E’ and ‘The Incredibles’.
New Irish cinema is well represented; the movie ‘Jump’, which has received rave reviews, was filmed in and around Derry and the stars Martin McCann and Ciaran McMenamin will be in attendance.
This year the Foyle Film Festival, which is organised by the Nerve Centre, is delighted to announce a new partnership with the state of the art 7-screen Brunswick Moviebowl.
Caoimhin McClafferty, operations manager, said: “The Brunswick Moviebowl is thrilled to be hosting the 25th Foyle Film Festival on this their Milestone year.
“It’s a fantastic programme of feature films, short films and documentaries, from around the world, and I would encourage everybody to come out and support this wonderful festival.”
Bernie McLaughlin added: “This year the festival is also delighted to announce a new partnership with The Ramada Da Vinci’s Hotel.”
The festival will close on Sunday 25 November with another Irish premiere of Thomas Vinterberg’s critically acclaimed foreign language film ‘The Hunt’, starring Mads Middelsen, who received Best Actor Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
