Derry singing and acting sensation DAMIAN McGINTY who is currently starring as Rory Flanagan in hit TV series Glee is this week’s Friday Child.

The 19-year-old from Woodbrook in Derry has risen to fame over the last number of years after being selected by Phil Coulter to appear with Celtic Thunder. Last year he won reality TV show The Glee Project to earn the role of Rory, which was originally intended to last just seven episodes. However, the young Derry star so impressed the show’s producers that his role has been extended. He is currently living and working in Los Angeles.

How would you describe yourself?

An upbeat person, who is incredibly ambitious and cannot sit still. I have to be doing something all the time. But I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Happiest childhood memory?

When my mum and dad told me “Damian, you can now cross the road.” I was never allowed to cross and call for my friends. Until I turned about 12 haha.

What was your first job?

First job was with Celtic Thunder. A music show that tours the world. You could say I got lucky....

Favourite book?

Always has been and always will be Harry Potter.

Favourite film?

I have a few, Home Alone is always one I like to watch, but Toy Story rules my world. I’m still a big kid at heart.

Favourite television programme?

Hmmm... Lost was incredible, never missed it. Now...Glee!

Favourite expression?

“Trust me.”

Favourite method of relaxation?

Sleep...I rarely get a chance to sit and do nothing. I get a couple of hours of sleep a day. That’s when I recover, and get ready for the next day!

Favourite holiday destination?

Marbella, Spain.

Who would you most like to meet?

Selena Gomez. I’ve been in the same building as her, and a few times, a few feet away from her, but still haven’t met her. Devastating.

What makes you angry?

People with big egos. Nothing worse, and I know quite a few!

What makes you happy?

Sounds crazy, but work makes me happy.

What human quality do you most admire?

Patience. I think it’s one of the greatest qualities.

What human quality do you least admire?

The ability to talk. Someone who can’t stop talking....let’s just say I’d preferably not be in their company!

What has been the most embarrassing thing to happen to you?

“I wish that I was Jessie’s girl”....

What was the worst thing to happen to you in your life?

My granda passing away. Hands down. Worst moment.

What is your greatest fear?

Failure. It’s what drives me on. If I don’t make where I wanna be, but I try my best, it wasn’t meant to be. But I always have to try my best, and continue to try and better myself.

What has been the high point of your life to date?

Probably winning the Glee Project. But I have a lot of great family memories. As much as I love my career, and even though I rarely see my family, they mean the world to me. And that will never change.

How would you like to be remembered?

As a caring person, who even though his life changed dramatically and he was exposed to the real world in Hollywood at such a young age, he stayed the Derry boy he’s always been. And successful of course... haha

What is your most treasured possession?

Holy cards. They have produced miracles.

If you won the lotto what would you do with it?

Sort my family for life, and friends. I’d definitely be generous. I like spreading money. What I like about earning a substantial amount of money is sharing it.

If you could be granted one wish in life, what would you ask for?

Be able to do what I do, but still live in Derry.
