David, whose surname is McGarrigle, goes by his middle name, Oliver and will bring his musical to Derry for the first time on Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14.

“I wrote ‘Gutz’ in March last year so it will be really polished and as close to the finished piece as it can be when the cast take to the stage in the Millennium Forum next week,” said an excited David Oliver.

‘Gutz’ boasts a 10 piece live band and all of the music and lyrics have been penned by himself.

David, who will celebrate his 38th birthday in the near future, has been playing musical instruments ever since he first picked up the trumpet at the age of eight.

“Many of the songs in ‘Gutz’ are songs that I have written throughout my years as a musician.

“I wanted to come up with a narrative that could be used in tandem with the songs,” David explained.

‘Gutz’ is set in New York and is about life working in the financial sector.

The musical’s central character is Casey Carson who one day dreams of attaining a top job amongst New York’s financial elite.

Casey leaves behind a small home town in Idaho and sets off in search of her dream job. Casey soon starts to ask herself whether she has left home at the right time and whether New York is what she expected it would be.

“I’ve been delighted with how the musical has been received so far - the Alley Theatre in Strabane ran the play twice and it sold out every single night.
