Volunteers and presenters at Inishowen Live, the online community radio station based in Carndonagh, marked their first birthday in style last week with a bash at the recently reopened Mary Deeney’s bar in Muff.
Despite being only a year in operation, the station has already established some household names with Ciaran Keogh (the Keoghster!), Marianne Ashcroft, and more recently well known Greencastle businessman and star of the stage Shane Carey.
The online station was born after the closure of the old Inishowen Community Radio FM left Inishowen without its own dedicated radio station. A group of enthusiastic individuals, some of whom had been employees or volunteers at ICR, came together to form their own radio station for the area. Now, the dedicated group of volunteers have their sights set on expanding on to the FM airwaves.
Marianne Ashcroft, presenter and volunteer believes the lively mix of music and chat is serving local people, and those who tune in from around the world, well.“The group are all volunteers and range from transition year students to retired businessmen all with one thing in common – a passion for local radio.
“During its first year Inishowen Live has broadcast a lively daily schedule which includes a range of local news and interviews, current affairs anmusic to suit all tastes from its Carndonagh-based studio. A very
successful “Official Launch” was held in Simpsons in Carndonagh which showcased a feast of local music talent.
“The station has also been lucky enough to host some celebrities and scored a few firsts – being the first radio station in the world to broadcast tracks from the latest Horslips CD release ‘Biography’ which was released to
coincide with the launch of the official Horslips biography released in October. After that, the book’s author Mark Cunningham came on board as a presenter! Last year’s Voice of Ireland finalist Shane McLaughlin has also been a studio guest, as well as local stars such as Kate O’Callaghan, Matt Whoriskey and Winter Mountain.”
Marianne says the station also reaches out to the Donegal Diaspora around the world, with the regular feature ‘Inishowen Calling’ making contact with Inishowen locals who are now based as far away as Los Angeles and the Caribbean Island of St. Maarten.”
