A DVD of a play about one of Derry’s most well known alcoholics will be shown at the House in the Wells later today.

Maire - a woman of Derry is one of the city’s most loved storied.

Last year when Carmel McCafferty gave her final performance as Maire, the play was filmed and made into a DVD.

It is this performance which will be shown at the Wet Hostel later today.

Patrick Downey, senior support worker at the House in the Wells revealed that they had approached playwright Brian Foster and asked if they could show the DVD.

“We spoke to the men here about it and they knew the story of Maire and the background to it,” said Patrick.

“I think the men will take a lot from watching the DVD.

“Although not all the residents are street drinkers, some of them have been in the town drinking and know the reaction they get. They will be able to relate to Maire’s story because some of them have very similar stories. “

There are 24 men in the hostel and Patrick says he would expect around ten to attend the screening although there could be more interest given the subject matter.

Patrick revealed that since the House in the Wells became a Wet House in October the men in the house have become more interactive.

“We now have a harm reduction model where we have controlled drinking. The model has been great for both the men and the staff. Before this our communal areas weren’t being used now the TV room is full.”
