To celebrate the launch of their fourth album Inishowen’s Henry Girls will be taking to the stage in Letterkenny this weekend with a whole host of musicians.
Malin sisters Karen, Lorna and Joleen McLaughlin will be starring in a concert An Grianan Theatre this coming Saturday 4th February to launch ‘December Moon’ with a variety of the best local musicians including Denise Boyle from Glenties, Buncrana musician Laurence Doherty and Ted Ponsonby from Letterkenny.
The Henry Girls will also be joined by the Inishowen Gospel Choir, of which sister Lorna was the co-founder along with Siobhan Shields.
This is a special night also for both groups because this is their second attempt at a concert together, the last one was just before Christmas, December 2010, when their Christmas concert was cancelled due to heavy snow!
As well as making their fourth CD last year, the girls have travelled to America, worked the backing tracks for Mary Black’s new CD, sang at golf’s Soldheim Cup at Killeen Castle in front President McAleese and millions of viewers watching worldwide, and they performed at Celtic Connectionsin in Glasgow.
Speaking to the ‘Journal’ yesterday sister Karen reckons this year is going to be just as busy.
“The past year has been great. We’ve been so busy and going to America to play at the Milwaukee Irish Fest was a big highlight,; we’re delighted we’ve been asked to go back again this year. ”
Despite their busy schedules, Karen a mother of young children, claims she couldn’t do it without the help of her family.
“My husband Matthew and my parents are amazingly supportive and I really couldn’t do it without them. We have to do a lot of our touring in the summer because my kids are off school, and Matthew, who is a lecturer, is at home.
“Although I’m the only one with children Lorna and Joleen are pretty busy during the year with teaching so the summer works out well.”
However not just limited to the summer, following their album’s promotional tour around Ireland, the Henry Girls will be travelling to Germany in March to perform at the Irish Spring Tour.
The Inishowen sisters are also just back from The Temple Bar Trad fest in Dublin where they performed four times over the five day event to great acclaim.
“We’re really looking forward to going to Germany but it will be very demanding. It is 24 nights of live music and I think there is only one or two nights off. It will be intense but it is well organised and we’ll be well looked after.”
