The student officially recognised as the most beautiful woman in France is relaxing in Derry this week and spending time off with family in the Waterside.

Elodie Zieba is the current Miss France and was awarded the title at a glamorous ceremony in February.

Elodie’s sister in law Muriel has been living in Kilfennan for the past 14 years after relocating from the Champagne district of France.

This week Elodie and her partner Alex - a French duathlon champion - are taking a break from very hectic schedules to spend time in the North West.

Speaking through a translator during a whistle stop visit to the Journal offices yesterday, Ms. Zieba said she was delighted to back in Derry after having visited here for the City of Culture Hallowe’en celebrations last year.

“I thought Derry was very pretty and very nice but I didn’t get to see a lot of it at that time, I didn’t have a chance to do anything much so I’m hoping to do some more during my visit this time. I’ll be visiting Belfast and also Donegal. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Elodie explained how her ‘Miss France’ schedule is demanding but said the role isn’t getting in the way of her academic life, which is also very important to her.

“I’m studying for a Masters in Economics and Sociology but I’m hoping to continue with my studies. Being Miss France means that I do have to attend different events every week. I attend different fairs and events. I was also invited to Paris fashion week which was amazing.”

In the coming months Elodie will travel extensively as part of her role, including a trip to Tunisia, where she will spend time doing charity work. She’ll also spend time in Poland.

The 24-year-old beauty queen is originally from Troyes, in north central France. Her partner Alex is the brother of Muriel D’Oria, who has lived and worked in Derry for the past 14 years.

Muriel explained how she’d bought Alex and Elodie flights to come back to Derry before Elodie was crowned Miss France.

“I didn’t know then that Elodie would be Miss France! I’m delighted for her but also so happy that she was able to fit the visit in to celebrate Easter here in Derry.

“This time we hope to be able to see lots more sights!”
