MTV will host at least one day of a major two day music festival at Ebrington, it has been confirmed.
The high-profile music channel will be hosting the event in September, with the line-up expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
MTV and Derry City Council are expected to make a statement about the event later today.
Derry City Council has been in talks with MTV over the past year concerning the event.
It is understood top music executives became interested and approached Derry City Council after seeing the first night of last year’s One Big Weekend featuring Calvin Harris at Ebrington.
Derry City Council has put up a substantial ampount of money for the two-day, which it hopes to recoup through ticket sales.
Earlier this year the council announced it was setting aside around £500,000 for such a large-scale music event as part of its legacy project post-City of Culture.
Sinn Fein Councillor and chairwoman of the Development Committee Elisha McCallion said:
“MTV are going to be the promoters for one of the days and we will have another promoter
for another day. It will be a two-day event.”
She added that no date had yet been fixed “to give MTV a bit of flexibility to allow them to get the best acts”.
“We are hoping to have an official statement later today and we are hoping to have a date, ticket sales in two to three weeks,” she said.
“This is great news for the city. In particular of course on the back of the negative stuff last week it is a great news story for the entire city, not just the residents and young people who are hopefully going to be in attendance, but also the tourism industry and the local economy.”
