Political parties have united in welcoming the announcement that One Big Weekend is coming to Derry.
SDLP MLA for Foyle, Mark H Durkan, said the yesterday’s announcement has caused great excitement.
“There is a real buzz about it. Many have fond memories of the last time we hosted One Big Weekend several years ago and many younger people who missed that are looking forward to it this time around. Derry showed with Sons and Daughters that we can put on a great show and this is another chance for us to showcase the city.” He paid tribute to those who secured the gig. “They ensured that one big ambition has become one big achievement.”
Sinn Fein Derry City Councillor, Colly Kelly, added: “This is great news for Derry, particularly for the young people of our city. I have been raising the issue of major music artists coming here during 2013 and the importance of trying to secure one or two major acts that could potentially attract thousands of people into Derry. Hopefully today’s announcement on the One Big Weekend will raise the profile of Derry to put it on the map to music promoters as a city that can stage large scale events and has the facilities capable of hosting major music acts. All those who worked very hard to secure this event need to be congratulated.
