ONE of Derry’s proudest glasses wearers is now a step closer to winning the coveted Spectacle Wearer of the Year Award, with a grand prize of £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas.
Sean McEleney, aged 27, from the city, was chosen from hundreds of entries from across Northern Ireland.
Known as the Oscars of the glasses world, the awards celebrate specs wearers from the UK and Republic of Ireland, across four age categories: 15-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+.
The awards were launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year, who Mr McEleney could meet at the awards ceremony if he triumphs in his age category.
The awards will be held at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday October 7. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
Mr McEleney is one of eight regional finalist chosen within Northern Ireland and is one of two finalists for the 25-39 age category.
Maeve Walsh, store director, Ferryquay Street Specsavers store, Derry says: ‘We would like to wish Mr McEleney all the very best for the final round of judging.
“It is such a great achievement to have reached the final eight within Northern Ireland. Mr McEleney really wears his Specsavers glasses well.”
All finalists will receive a VIP make-over and goodies courtesy of celebrity hairdresser James Brown and Hollywood’s favourite make-up brand Stila.
“The Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2014 winner will be announced on 06 October at the awards final and will receive £10,000, plus a week’s holiday for two in the Bahamas.”
