Superb line-up for Walled City Music Festival

This year’s festival welcomes a world-class line-up of classical musicians for a series of concerts, workshops and showcases across the four-day event.

After a fabulous opening concert last night, final-year students of the Ulster University Music Department will take to the stage in two concerts today, a lunchtime recital in Christ Church and an evening cabaret in the Cultúrlann Centre. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their musical talents as part of the Walled City Music Festival programme and hear inspiring words from guests Moya Brennan (Clannad) and Mickey Bradley (The Undertones). They will also be treated to guest performances from jazz trumpeter Linley Hamilton and guitarist Julien Colarossi.

The classical music festival continues on Saturday evening with an exciting programme from one of the foremost pianists of the USA, Jeremy Denk, and closes on Sunday evening with a thrilling evening of sumptuous music from German violinist Kirill Troussov, described as “one of the most gifted violinists of his generation”. Please note that this concert will replace the previously advertised Measha Brueggergosman concert, which has been cancelled due to the illness of the guest artist. All tickets purchased for Measha will automatically be transferred to the Kirill Troussov concert at the same time and in the same venue. Alternatively, a full refund will be available.

Walled City Music also hosts a substantial outreach programme throughout the festival and will welcome 6 composers to workshop their ideas for percussion instruments with guest artists Andy Akiho (Steel Pan) and Ian David Rosenbaum (Percussion) before an informal public performance of their works in the Foyle Arts Building at 5pm today. And, Babu Press will return to Derry for a second year to present a series of children’s classical music workshops based on the tale of Gulliver’s Travels. They will visit 6 primary schools around the city and welcome children and families to a public performance in The Playhouse tomorrow at 10.30am.

The festival will once again bring to life the classical music tradition of Derry and looks forward to welcoming top-quality, world-renowned musicians to perform in the city’s venues and work with local aspiring musicians.
