The Undertones celebrate 40th with special concert

As part of their fortieth birthday celebrations, The Undertones will be performing a special hour-long concert recorded in front of a capacity audience at the BBC's Blackstaff Studios in Belfast.

The band will be playing tracks from their debut LP, including hits such as Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer and Teenage Kicks, and talking to Stephen McCauley about the stories behind the songs and their early days together in Derry and beyond.

The band will be talking about how it all began; how the O’Neill’s house became band HQ, revealing just what it was like to be the only punk band in the city and writing the iconic ‘Teenage Kicks’.

Presenter Stephen McCauley said: The Undertones’ songs are timeless and will last forever and we will still be jumping around and doing strange dances to Jimmy Jimmy and Teenage Kicks. I love these songs and have grown up with them all my life, but it’s great to go back and marvel at just how great they really are. I think we take them for granted, but these are incredible musicians, as well as songwriters and when they perform live it electrifies the room. I want to get back and find out more by talking to them about the first LP and hopefully give listeners an insight as to what makes this band so special.”

The Undertones At The BBC will be broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle on Monday 30 May at 3pm.
