If the Christmas lights are twinkling in the Guildhall Square then it is time for Tyrone comedian William Caulfield to don his good frock and take to the stage of the Millennium Forum for the annual panto.
This is the seventh year that the local funnyman has taken on the role of the Forum’s panto dame and he said he is delighted to be taking part in his favourite of all the festive panto offerings - ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’.
“I’m playing Nurse Molly Coddle - who has raised Snow White so wants to keep a wee maternal and protective eye on her,” William told the Journal.
As the dame, William is the glue who holds the panto together - transporting the audience through the story and keeping them onside with some well timed comedy - aimed at all age groups.
“Yes, the comedy works on two levels,” he said. “I’m there to make the children laugh through a mix of slap stick and jokes but the adults need to be careful too. It’s nothing too risque but the jokes can work on two levels.”
Indeed the only safe seat in the house, William explains, may well be in the higher levels of the balcony. Anyone else is “fair game”.
William said he is only too happy to keep coming back to the Forum year in and year out because each year the producers of the local panto set about “raising the bar” year and year again.
“Each year the standard has improved and this year is the best yet. Everyone from the producer to the director to the choreographer work so hard to ensure that the audience gets to see the best show they can.
“And this is a great show - full of singing, dancing, fun and jokes and most of all with those seven little stars in the form of the seven dwarfs!”
The panto features of host of local stars, such as Gemma McMeel as Snow White, Darren Franklin as the very handsome Prince Charming.
