Roma Downey is to receive an honorary degree from the University of Ulster.

The Derry-born actress and producer - an alumna of UU - will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Art (DFA) for her outstanding contribution to acting and philanthropy.

It’s believed she will attend UU’s summer graduation ceremony in Derry next month.

The Magee graduations are scheduled to take place at the Millennium Forum on July 7 and 8.

Roma Downey is the executive producer of the television miniseries ‘The Bible’ on the History Channel. She also plays the role of Mother Mary in the series.

‘The Bible’ shattered sales records in its first week of home video release, selling 525,000 units to become the top-selling TV mini-series of all time.

Downey and her husband, Mark Burnett, also produced the movie version of the series, “Son of God.”

Also getting an honorary degree at next month’s ceremonies is Frank Cottrell-Boyce who wrote ‘The Return of Colmcille’ for last year’s City of Culture celebrations.

He will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) for his outstanding contribution to writing.
