Calling all fans of Batman, Spiderman, Avengers, X-Men, Superman and the Undead – the 2D Northern Ireland Comics Festival is upon us once again!

After a spectacular start, 2D continues today at the Verbal Arts Centre by day, and Sandinos Bar by night. The now internationally recognised festival is now widely talked about and recommended by comic aficionados all over the world.

This weekend features some of the world’s best comic artists and writers who have worked on everything from legendary superheroes, Star Wars and the Walking Dead to the Beano and Dandy.

The Festival culminates with tomorrow’s hugely popular 2D Comics Fair, held at the Verbal Arts Centre from 10am-5pm.

‘Comic Effect with Sunnyside Comics’ - This is a live edition of Sunnyside Comics critically acclaimed podcast, with a selection of fantastic guests. Sandinos. Time: 7.15pm – 8.15pm

‘License to Thrill? Comic Book Movie & TV Panel - The latest comic movies and TV adaptations will be discussed with razor sharp wit, with Jock, John Higgins, Emma Vieceli, Will Simpson and more. Sandinos. Time - 8.15pm – 9.15pm

Charity Sketch Off & Raffle

A selection of our intrepid guest artists will produce sketches to be raffled off to the highest bidder! Proceeds to the fantastic local charity, ‘Foyle Search & Rescue’. Sandinos. Time - 9.15pm – 10pm

Comics Fair - Verbal Arts Centre

The annual 2D Comics Fair is undoubtedly the highlight of the entire festival as Derry’s Verbal Arts Centre heaves with activity and creativity from 10am-5pm.

All day activities include Drawing Competitions at Blooms Cafe, with three comps to choose from: Ben 10 Alien Design; Design a Moshi Monster and Super Mario Costume Design. Entries collected tomorrow, with winners to be announced on Friday, June 8. Also for kids, there’s face-painting, a Superhero Drawing Wall where you can win spot prizes, ‘Monster Me’ Drawing Booths and the ‘My Hero’ Comic Art Competition Prize-Giving, taking place at 2pm in Verbal’s Reception.

‘Comic Art & Storytelling’ Workshop - In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create art to feature in your own comic stories, with Alan Nolan, creator of the Big Break Detectives graphic novel series.

‘Comic Art’ Workshop with Beano artist Laura Howell - Tricks of the comic trade from one of the best in the business. Time: 11.30am - 12.30pm, Library, Verbal Arts Centre. (for public: Age 5+)

‘Make Me a Superhero’ T-Shirt Workshop - Create your own superhero logo and paint it on to a T-shirt to create your own cool costume, with comedian, artist and writer Bec Hill. Time: 12.30pm – 1.30pm, Library, Verbal Arts Centre. (for public: Age 5+)

‘Masterclass with Nick Brennan’

Interview with Cam Kennedy
