Derry based design studio Art Glass have been commissioned to create a large stained glass window to be installed in New Zealand in the transept of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland.
And incredibly a large area of the window will be a representation of Derry’s own patron saint, ColmCille.
The window will also depict the Saint Pierre Chanel the patron Saint of Oceania who was martyred on the island of Futuna to the North east of New Zealand in 1841.
After completion the window will be transported and installed in sections over a period of time.
The commission has been welcomed by Philip and Sinead Coyle, the husband and wife team behind Art Glass, which was established in 1983.
“It is wonderful when figurative art of this nature is appreciated, contrary to the view of some in the established art world, technique, craftsmanship are not dead skill and expertise are not obsolete,” they said.
