BAFTA award-winning writer Jimmy McGovern, the man behind the Channel 4 films ‘Sunday’ and ‘Hillsborough’, has described Derry as “one of the friendliest cities I’ve ever visited” in a leading British newspaper.

In ‘My Kind of Town’, McGovern said of the city: “I suspect that in time it [Derry] will become a popular tourist destination.. it’s currently the Capital of Culture, so now is the time to go.

“I love to walk around the city walls, which gives you a real sense of the city’s long and at times troubled past,” McGovern told the Daily Telegraph. He also listed his favourite things such as St Columb’s Cathedral, the City Hotel, drinking Guinness in the Park Bar and dining at Custom House and Timber Quay. “As an Englishman – and a Liverpudlian – I found the murals dating back to the Troubles absolutely fascinating, be they Unionist or Republican,” he said. “The Museum of Free Derry, which tells you all about Bloody Sunday, is also a must-see.”
