A sneaky peek inside the Venue at Ebrington earlier this week literally left me spinning with excitement.
As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, suddenly the vast team of dancers and musicians rehearsing for Hofesh Shechter’s dance masterpiece ‘Political Mother: Derry~Londonderry Uncut’ were lit up, illuminating the entire hall. The scene was breathtaking.
Colourful, stunning and with a thumping, pounding score, the show runs this weekend, March 8 and 9, and looks unlike anything Derry has ever seen before.
While dancers dominate the stage, layers of musicians appear to be elevated behind the action. Giant bodhrans and lambegs are lit in reds and oranges like beacons on high. Below that, a line of violin players appeared, then drummers, guitarists, all under moody, atmospheric lighting. The huge production was, quite literally, stunning.
Besides the many local people involved in the show, the team from the world-famous Hofesh Shechter Company have been here for weeks, immersed in rehearsals. This weekend, their dedication will pay dividends.
It’s difficult to describe what lies ahead. Billed as something of a rock concert with dance, Political Mother has already wowed crowds everywhere. Now it’s Derry’s turn to experience its unfamiliar magic and I, for one, can’t wait...
