A series of free musical events will take place in the city before the 10th City of Derry Guitar Festival kicks off at the North West Regional College from August 24-26.

The first concert took place yesterday at Bloom’s Cafe in the Verbal Arts Centre. Tomorrow, Saturday, August 18, will see a free taster session in the scenic Cottage of the Craft Village between 1-3pm. At the Cottage, artistic director Sean Woods will hold a talk about classical guitar and different playing techniques, and will entertain the audience with a few live tunes.

A second concert will also take place at Bloom’s Cafe in the Verbal Arts Centre next Wednesday, August 22, between 1-2pm and featuring jazz guitarist Michael Watters.

Applications are still open for all courses at the City of Derry Guitar Festival. Those wishing to develop their playing abilities or song-writing skills will be able to avail of workshops and masterclasses which will include Classical, Acoustic and Beginners guitar courses, as well as the AC/DC Riffs Library electric guitar and the new Songwriting Course.

Evening performances will feature internationally acclaimed artists such as Gary Ryan, Carlos Bonell and Sean Woods and Sarah Murphy.

At lunch time, audiences will be treated to a recital by guitar and soprano Tonos Duo, specialising in baroque music.

Concerts at this year’s festival include a Guitar Gala at 8pm next Friday, August 24, featuring a selection of short performances by all the artists involved in the festival, including Carlos Bonell, Gary Ryan, Sean Woods and Sarah Murphy.

Next Saturday, August 25, at 1.15pm, the Tonos Duo will perform Baroque Guitar and Soprano at the North West Regional College, while later that evening at 8pm Gary Ryan will provide a stunning solo performance at the same venue.

As the festival draws to a close next Sunday, August 26, a Student Gala at 7pm will see performances by all the students involved in the guitar courses and the City of Derry Guitar Festival Ensemble will premiere a new piece by Gary Ryan.
