Hallowe’en means MONSTERS and to celebrate Hallowe’en this year, a new competition is inviting local primary-school pupils to create an original monster of their own – with the winning monsters published right here in the Derry Journal!

Your monster can be anything you like; from something almost human, to a disgusting big blob or a giant scary troll, the only limit is your imagination! This fantastic drawing competition has been created in Partnership with the Verbal Arts Centre, Derry City Council, the Derry Journal and 2D Comics Festival.

So get creative! And when you have created your very own monster, you must also include the following details; the character’s name; its age; its height; its weight; any interesting fact about your monster, and whether your monster is good or evil or perhaps somewhere in between? All competition entries must be drawn on an A4 or A3 page, and it can be in either black and white or colour. It’s up to you!

The competition is open to three separate age groups, with a prize awarded to the best of each age group from Foundation (P1, P2), Key Stage 1 (P3, P4) and Key Stage 2 (P5, P6, P7). The winners will be notified on Wednesday, October 24.

Each prize consists of a Family Pass for the fantastic ‘Dragon Safari’ in St. Columb’s Park on Monday, October 29, and Tuesday, October 30, from 1pm-5pm (latest admission 4.30pm), and or Wednesday, October 31, from 1pm-3pm (latest admission 2.30pm). Your winning art will also be featured in the Derry Journal newspaper, and of course, you’ll also be in with the chance of winning a 2D Comics Festival pack, with its super-cool festival bag, folder, pens, pencils and a pencil case.
