Ashleigh Coyle is best known in Derry for her time on ‘Big Brother’ in 2014. She’s also a successful model.
So it’s safe to say the Eglinton woman knows a thing or two about the beauty industry. That’s part of the reason why she’s been organising the Miss Derry competition in the city for the past three years.
It’s important to me that people know that the beauty industry is evolving all the time and I’ve tried my best to change with thatAshleigh Coyle, Miss Derry organiser
She’s also set up her own modelling agency.
Well aware of attitudes to the traditional concept of the beauty competition, Ashleigh says Miss Derry has been reborn. She’s hoping that a stronger focus on the achievements and abilities of each individual contestant will highlight what the competition is all about.
Contestants are aged between 16 and 25.
The Derry event takes place in the City Hotel next Friday, April 27. The winner from that evening will represent the city at the Miss Ireland competition and could potentially move forward to take part in the Miss World competition.
Ahead of the Derry heats, contestants will be interviewed by a panel of judges before the final on April 27. On the night of the final there will be a number of catwalk stages.
“It’s important to me that people know that the beauty industry is evolving all the time and I’ve tried my best to change with that. I want the contestants to be good role models and I want the competition to represent real women too. Contestants will be asked about their charity work and what they hope to do in the future. The beauty industry isn’t just about showing people who are size four anymore and we have people in Miss Derry who are size 12 and 14. These girls are real girls who I believe will be positive role models for everyone around them.”
The Miss Derry event will start at 7:15pm on April 27 at the City Hotel. Tickets are available at the hotel.
