Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has agreed to perform in Derry as part of next year’s City of Culture celebrations, thanks to the efforts of delighted local publishers Yes! Publications, working in partnership with Guildhall Press and Derry Writers Group.
The internationally acclaimed poet has agreed to do two readings here in Autumn 2013, accompanied by actor-musician John Sampson.
Also confirmed to return to the city for the much-anticipated Culture celebrations is Derry poet Colette Bryce, who in recent decades has carved a reputation as a poet of note. Bryce will deliver two poetry workshops as part of the programme of events for 2013.
The afternoon reading with Carol Ann Duffy and John Sampson for “children of all ages” will take place in the Waterside Theatre next October 5, 2013.
Iain Barr from the Waterside Theatre welcomed the news: “The Waterside Theatre is delighted to have Carol Ann Duffy, one of the most significant names in contemporary British poetry, perform during our Children’s Literature Festival. This provides a rare and wonderful opportunity for all the young people in our City to be inspired by this critically acclaimed Poet Laureate.”
The evening reading with Carol Ann Duffy and John Sampson will be open to schools and the general public, hosted at St Cecelia’s College on Saturday, October 5, next year.
Carol Ann Duffy’s poetry has received many awards, including the Signal Prize for Children’s Verse, the Whitbread and Forward Prizes, as well as the E. M. Forster Prize in America.
In 2009, Carol Ann Duffy became Poet Laureate. Workshops and readings are funded through UK city of Culture.
