Music, dance and drama will bring Derry’s historic walls to life over the next seven days as the Apprentice Boys hold their annual Maiden City Festival in the city.
Apprentice Boys Governor Jim Brownlee, the festival’s chairman, said the line up is an impressive one.
The Maiden City Festival is a huge attraction to the city each August. For community, history and heritage, and diversity in performance we have to again congratulate the Festival team on a super programme which makes such a huge contribution to Londonderry as UK City of Culture 2013.”
Opening on August 3 with a Bluegrass and Folk Weekend, the festival will feature music, drama, dance and discussion on Protestant history and culture and will culminate in the 324th Annual Commemoration of the Relief of Derry parade onAugust 10.
Organisers say there is a strong emphasis on history and drama throughout the week, with the Siege Story being told in St Columb’s Cathedral each day in a short five-part drama.
There is also a demonstration of Siege guns and cannon at the Memorial Hall, and Siege characters around the Walls telling Siege Tales.
David Hoey, Festival Programmer said the festival will be a “ great week of dance, music and drama all around and within the historic Walls.”
“The Maiden City Festival offers a tremendous family day out for visitors, and there is plenty to make an overnight stay well worthwhile.
“History brought to life around the Walls, while our huge range of lunchtime Culture Bite performances in 9 café venues means the entertainment never stops through to the evening lectures and shows, with the highlight this year of Shaun Davey’s Relief of Derry Symphony, arranged for flutes in St Columb’s Cathedral.”
Eddie Rowan, Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s Events Manager added:“We are delighted to once again support the Maiden City Festival in such a fantastic year for Derry~Londonderry as it embraces the mantle of the UK City of Culture 2013.
“It’s an immense opportunity to showcase to both locals and visitor alike the wonderful people, talent, arts and cultural scene of this great city and provides a perfect platform to retell its many stories and reveal its culture and heritage through the programme of activity on offer for all to enjoy.”
